Ipratropium nasal (Atrovent nasal)

HOW DOES THIS DRUG WORK?

This drug blocks the effect of the cholinergic nerves. This causes the muscles to relax and the lung bronchi to dilate for improved breathing. It also relieves a runny nose.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Treats a runny nose and improves breathing that is affected by allergies.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

- Cough
- Dry mouth, metallic taste in the mouth
- Dry nose, irritation, burning or itching in the nose
- Stuffy nose
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Infection in the respiratory tract
- Nausea
- Nosebleeds

MAJOR CAUTIONS

- Blurred vision
- Skin rash or hives
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, or face
- Vomiting

DRUG INTERACTIONS

- Atropine, hyoscyamine, or related medications; cromolyn sodium
