Antidepressants Drugs For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Remedy

Tricyclic antidepressants approved for ADHD include imipramine (Tofranil, Janimine) and desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane).

Other antidepressants prescribed for ADHD, but not officially approved for ADHD, include bupropion (Wellbutrin), reboxetine (Edronax), and venlafaxine (Effexor). It should be noted that the exact effects of Wellbutrin are not known with certainty; it may act on the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, and have a stimulant effect.

HOW DO THESE DRUGS WORK?

Antidepressants are considered second-line therapy for ADHD because they are typically used in patients who have both ADHD and depression, or when stimulants are not working. Generally speaking, antidepressants are believed to work by increasing levels of three neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are believed to be low in the ADHD patient
