Some Facts about Acne

Many teenagers get acne vulgaris (commonly called acne), but this problem is a sore point for quite a number of people from 10 and up to their forties. In females, acne can develop even during their 20s, long after its last manifestation during their adolescence (or it can even become a first one).

Acne lesions are commonly referred to as comedones (noninflammatory follicular papules), inflammatory pustules, white- or blackheads, pimples, cysts (more severe forms).

Necrotic inflammatory cells of the skin result in pustules. A papule (pimple) is a deeper form of infection. Large nodules are sometimes called cysts. It should be noted that the pus in them does not keep any infectious bacteria.

Accumulating excess oils break to the skin surface in the forms of whiteheads and blackheads (medically known as an open comedo). In the latter case the oil has melanin in it or is oxidized. Blackheads look like dirt, but this is misconception as acne is not caused by dirt.

Acne affects the areas of skin with the densest population of oil glands, such as the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. The exact causes of acne are not fully known. Adolescence is usually associated with acne as both boys and girls start to produce male sex hormones from the adrenal glands thus activating oil glands. Sebum (oil substance coming from oil glands) is meant to protect our skin. But due to the blockages of oil glands openings acne develops. The naturally occurring bacteria start to multiply in the oil blocked beneath the skin, leading to inflammatory lesions.

There are many products available for the treatment of acne that do not require a prescription. It is not uncommon to consult a doctors when deciding what product to use, especially when considering a combination of them or in severe cases of acne.
